A Sewer (Plumbing, Drain or Drain Auger) Snake is flexible coiled wire made to travel down into pipes. The flexibility of the snake allows it to twist and bend around pipe joints and connecting angles. The purpose of a snake is to clear interior piping from clogs by forcing its way through them and opening the pipe back up to normal drainage. Snakes can be used for any drain pipe clog removal, from sewer pipes to bathroom sink traps, with equal effectiveness.
The least powerful snake for home use is a hand-powered model, but there are also other powered models. Some are electric, while others are designed to attach to a handheld power drill. Be careful not to use a power drill attachment on full speed when running the drain snake through the pipe. When snaking a drain, it is best to try to catch the clog on the corkscrew auger and pull it slowly back up through the drain if possible, rather than forcing it loose and sending it further into the drain where it could become lodged again. Before using a drain snake, prepare the area with plenty of old towels since it can often get messy.
